Overcrowded classrooms, bullies and bad teachers are all contributing to a massive increase in home schooling in South Africa. In 1997, the number of home schooled children was 2000.
In 2001, it had increased to 10 000. By 2011, 57 000 children had been home schooled. It’s likely that number has doubled by 2015.
The options for homeschooling in South Africa is reasonably varied. Children must be registered with the Department of Education as being taught at home. Kids who are homeschooled can be taught by anyone at home, have a private tutor or attend a tutorial centre.
The personal approach home schooling offers – where parents can choose what their children learn – is a big draw card to home schooling. However, it’s the personal attention each student is given that’s really the biggest drawcard for parents.
